There are many artist, perhaps lesser known, that are a wise investment.  This video shows the connection of British and American artist and the influences of Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko and others during this time period.  

Many European artist had come to America to escape the fascist regimes. It was the American artists’ exposure to European modernist movements that resulted in the founding of the Museum of Modern Art.
